Fluorite is the main source of chemical element fluorine in industry. Different grades of fluorite products can be distinguished by the content of calcium fluoride (CaF2). In terms of fluorite ore types, there are many single-type fluorite deposits, but the reserves of a single deposit are small; the associated fluorite ore has a low grade, but the resource volume can reach tens of millions of tons.

1. New foreign technologies enable greener and more efficient production of fluorite-fluoride

Recently, the research group of Professor Véronique Gouverneur of Oxford University introduced a new low-temperature activation method based on fluorite. By using acid-grade fluorite in aqueous phase in combination with fluorine-affinity Lewis acids (such as boric acid or silica), fluoride can be obtained directly from fluorite under mild conditions. This method not only avoids the generation of HF, but also provides a safer way to produce fluoride, reduces dependence on traditional high-temperature reactions, and reduces the demand for fossil fuels. This new method can produce a variety of widely used fluorides, including tetrafluoroboric acid, alkali metal fluorides, tetraalkylammonium fluorides, etc. The safety, scalability and sustainability of this new method demonstrate the future potential of fluoride production.
